Ulysses "Les" Herman Jones served in the infantry during the Korean War, but, to this day not even his family knows exactly what he did during the Vietnam War years, that brought him many decorations from both wars.
Mr. Jones, age 81, spent 20 plus years in the military, including tours in Germany, Korea, Vietnam and 14 other countries. He worked in several managerial positions at the former Shawmut National Bank and Trust Company for 3 years. Moving to the former E.G. and G. as a Senior Property Administer before retiring in the early 1990's. Taking an early retirment from Shawmut ( Fleet) in 1985.
Mr. Jones and his family lived in Cambridge and Lynn before moving to Beverly permanently in 1977.
Mr. Jones graduated from a Philadelphia , PA Vocational High School in 1945, with diplomas in Piston Aeronautics Mechanics , German and Italian Languages. Joining the US Army in 1947, mastering Spanish and Portugese during his lengthy service.
Trained as an Infantryman during Basic, attending the Infantry Center School, Fort Benning, GA. Arriving in Korea September 1950, captured- becoming a Prisoner of War by the North Koreans/Chinese in December 1950. Among the decorations Sgt Jones received during the Korean and Vietnam Wars, were the Distinguished Service Cross(DSC), Bronze Star, Purple Heart with Two Oak Leaf Clusters, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Prisoner of War Medal, Good Conduct Medal with Five Knots and the Combat Infantryman Badge. He never discussed what he did in the service and his family never asked, his sons mention.
In 1968, Mr. Jones enrolled (nightts) at Boston University, receiving a BS Degree in 1976, majoring in Accounting. Before is death, Mr. Jones worked as an Accounting Consultant, while authoring under the pseudonym Otterman J. Hermen, five books: REMEMBERANCE PAST AND PRESENT: A STORY, THE GIFT, LEE, ENCOUNTER AND REFLECTIONS. Also active in his retirment as a volunteer with Boston Logan U.S.O. and a member of the Catholic Charities North, Adversary Board.
He is the husband of the late Verelela"Lee" (Pomare) Jones. Father of Kim L. of Scottdale, AZ and Hugh H. of North Andover. Grandfather of Scott S., Carly M. and Zachary.
Funeral from the Brown & Hickey Funeral Home 36 Trapelo Rd. Belmont Friday at 9am. Funeral mass in St. Peter's Church 100 Concord Ave. Cambridge at 10am. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Visiting hours Thursday 4-7pm. Interment Cambridge Cemetery.
